Sport License Requirements

To qualify for the Sport Pilot's certificate, an applicant must:

  1. Be at least 17 years of age
  2. Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  3. Posses a valid US driver's license
  4. You do not need a current FAA medical but you must never have been rejected for your last FAA medical
  5. Log at least 20 hours of flight time, of which:
    • 15 hours must be dual instruction with a qualified instructor
    • 2 hours must be cross country dual instruction
    • 5 hours must be solo flight
  6. Fly one solo cross country over a total distance of 75+ nautical miles to two different locations
  7. Have received 2+ hours of the dual instruction within the preceding 2 calendar months
  8. Pass the written test
  9. Pass the practical check ride

The restrictions on a Sport Pilot certificate are:

  1. No more than one passenger
  2. Daytime flight only
  3. No flight above 10,000 feet
  4. Max takeoff weight of 1320 lbs
  5. No flight in radio communication airspace (classes A,B,C,D)
