Private Pilot Requirements

To qualify for a private pilot's license, an applicant must:

  1. Be at least 17 years of age (may solo at 16)
  2. Hold at least a third class FAA medical
  3. Log 40 hours of flight time which must include:
    • 20 hours of dual instruction with a qualified instructor and must include:
      • 3 hours of night flying (including one cross country)
      • 10 T/O's and 10 landings to a full stop in an airport traffic pattern at night
      • 3 hours of training by reference to instruments
      • 3 hours of cross country training
      • 3 hours of training within the preceding 2 months of taking the practical test.
    • 10 hours of solo flight and must include:
      • 5 hours of cross country
      • 1 cross country of at least 150 nautical miles and landings at 3 different locations
      • 3 T/O's and landings to a full stop at a control towered airport
  4. Pass a written test
  5. Pass a practical check ride
